Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis is completely removed. It is one of the oldest medical and cultural practices of mankind and is performed for various reasons, which can be of a medical, religious, cultural or aesthetic nature.
Medical reasons for circumcision
In some cases, circumcision is recommended for medical reasons, including
- Phimosis: A narrowing of the foreskin that makes it difficult to retract and causes discomfort.
- Paraphimosis: An acute complication in which the retracted foreskin cannot be pushed back over the glans.
- Recurrent inflammation: Recurrent infections of the foreskin (balanitis) or urinary tract infections.
- Hygiene problems: In rare cases, when a malformation or other factors prevent adequate cleaning.

Desired circumcision
Elective circumcision is performed at the express request of the patient or the parents of a minor child, without a medical indication.
The intervention
Circumcision is usually performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia or twilight sleep. The procedure usually takes 30 minutes. During the procedure, the foreskin is removed with a surgical instrument and the wound is then properly stopped and sutured.
