A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is gently inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. In some cases, an implant can also be inserted in the same session as tooth removal. Dental implants provide the anchoring option in the jaw for prosthetic dentures to be able to attach prosthetic dentures.
Dental implants can also be used as an anchoring option to provide a firm hold for dentures and make them as inconspicuous as possible (without covering the palate) if a denture has insufficient hold, as is often the case in the lower jaw due to the flat bone and movable tongue, or if a restoration without a palate cover is desired in the upper jaw.
