Summer is finally here! With the warm season, topics such as the right sun protection for our skin are increasingly coming to the fore, including on our social media. For three months, the interdisciplinary Salvida team shared facts and tips about our skin health with you. Here is a summary of the most important findings.
Our skin is not only the largest organ in our body, but also a real powerhouse. It regulates our heat balance and produces vitamin D with the help of sunlight. Over the next three months, we will be focusing on skin health with the support of our healthcare providers and providing exciting facts and helpful recommendations about this fascinating organ.
A healthy oral mucosa forms the basis for good oral flora. You can find out more here. Our skin also consists of different layers – epidermis, dermis and subcutis – each of which fulfills important functions. The epidermis protects us from external influences and regulates the water balance. The dermis provides elasticity and stability and contains nerve endings that enable us to touch and feel. The subcutis not only acts as an energy store and insulator, but is also an important part of our immune system. Only in combination can these layers fulfill the many tasks that our body performs on a daily basis.
Melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, protects our skin from UV radiation. It gives the skin its color and helps to prevent sunburns. Nevertheless, we should be aware that too much sunlight can be harmful. Melanin is not only influenced by sunlight, but also by hormones and can lead to freckles or age spots.
Although ageing is inevitable, there are ways to slow down the process and maintain a youthful appearance. A careful skincare routine and the use of appropriate anti-ageing products can help to slow down the natural ageing process and keep skin healthy. At Salvida, we offer anti-aging treatments to reduce wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of aging.
Our skin has an amazing ability to heal itself. Despite constant exposure to harmful influences, it can regenerate and maintain healthy tissue structures. Cell division and migration play an important role in repairing damaged areas. Careful skin care, protection from environmental factors, a healthy diet, sufficient rest and stress management support our skin’s self-healing function.
Nails and hair are not only aesthetic features, but also indicators of our health. Our hair is amazingly resilient and can withstand considerable stress. The cross grooves on the nails can indicate past health conditions such as infections, malnutrition or certain diseases. It is interesting to note that our fingernails grow at different rates, with thumb and middle finger nails generally growing the fastest.
The skin is a fascinating organ with multiple functions. By caring for it, maintaining a healthy oral mucosa, protecting it from UV radiation and taking anti-ageing measures, we not only help to actively support our skin health, but can also contribute to a youthful appearance. You can find more information in our social media posts. We look forward to exploring the next topic with you from July!
