Thermal ablation, also known as sclerotherapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that is used in cases of persistent menstrual bleeding disorders to obliterate the lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is typically used in women who suffer from persistent heavy menstrual blood loss (menorrhagia) and for whom conservative treatment options, such as drug therapies, have been unsuccessful.
The heating of the mucosal tissue leads to its destruction. This interrupts the periodic cyclical build-up. In 85% of cases there is no more bleeding. Some women still report spotting during menstruation.
Indications:
- Persistent or excessive menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
- Alternative to hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
- Failure of conservative treatment approaches (e.g. hormone therapies)
Procedure:
- Thermal ablation is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
This procedure is particularly suitable for women who have completed their family planning and wish to preserve their uterus.
